چکیده

Ion recombination in ionization chambers is usually considered as a side effect, which influences the accuracy of the determination of the absorbed dose. This is generally true for volume recombination, but not always for initial recombination, i.e. the recombination which occurs between the ions created in the same track of a single ionizing particle or resulting from a single ionization event. Contrary to volume recombination, the initial one does not depend on dose rate but it depends on ion density within the tracks. Therefore, the measurable parameters associated with initial recombination carry information about the local density of ions created in the tracks of the ionizing particles in small volumes of the traversed medium (with a mass of the order of one femtogram) and can be correlated with the linear energy transfer (LET) or with other parameters describing radiation quality. The phenomenon of initial recombination and its relationship with radiation quality has been used in the so-called recombination chambers, where the conditions for the initial recombination are created purposely. The chambers are mostly tissue equivalent, filled with hydrocarbon gases at elevated pressure, in order to keep the gas density in the chamber volume above approximately 2 kg/m. The chamber volume, the polarizing voltage and the distance between electrodes in the chamber are optimized in such a way that the ions are Initial recombination of ions in ionization chambers filled with hydrocarbon gases Michał A. New applications of the recombination method in the dosimetry of mixed radiation fields

INTRODUCTION In order to define the recombination methods, one should distinguish between two main processes of recombination of ions in gases initial recombination, which occurs within a track of a single charged particle and volume recombination, which occurs when ions from tracks of different particles may recombine. It is essential that the initial recombination does not depend of the dose ...

Correction for Recombination Loss of Ions in Ionization Chambers - Nuclear Science Symposium, 1998. Conference Record. 1998 IEEE

The signal charge loss due to initial recombination and that due to volume recombination have been measured separately using parallel plate ionization chambers irradiated with cobalt60 gamma rays, over a wide range of applied voltage and air humidity. It is shown that both initial and volume recombination depend on the electric field strength and also on humidity through ion clustering reaction...

Ion recombination in liquid ionization chambers Development of an experimental method to quantify general recombination

An experimental method (the two-dose-rate method) for the correction of general recombination losses in liquid ionization chambers has been developed and employed in experiments with different liquids and radiation qualities. The method is based on a disassociation of initial and general recombination, since an ionized liquid is simultaneously affected by both of these processes. The two-dose-r...

Study of Neutron-Induced Ionization in Helium and Argon Chamber Gases

We present studies of Heliumand Argon-filled ionization chambers exposed to intense neutron fluxes from PuBe neutron sources (En = 1− 10 MeV). The sources emit about 10 neutrons per second. The number of ion pairs in the chamber gas volume per incident neutron is derived. While limited in precision because of a large gamma ray background from the PuBe sources, our results are consistent with th...

Characterization of Recombination Effects in a Liquid Ionization Chamber Used for the Dosimetry of a Radiosurgical Accelerator

Most modern radiation therapy devices allow the use of very small fields, either through beamlets in Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) or via stereotactic radiotherapy where positioning accuracy allows delivering very high doses per fraction in a small volume of the patient. Dosimetric measurements on medical accelerators are conventionally realized using air-filled ionization chambe...
